Laser use at Georgia Tech is subject to the regulations of the Georgia Department of Community Health. Georgia Tech operates its laser safety program according to the regulations, ANSI Z136 series of laser safety standards, and Laser Safety Policy Manual.
The Office of Radiological Safety (ORS) provides services to assist with the safe use and regulatory compliance of Class 3B, Class 4, and embedded lasers and laser systems. These services include:
- Safety training for all users of Class 3B and Class 4 lasers
- Registration of devices with the Georgia Department of Community Health
- Emergency response
- Laser hazard assessments
- Specification of laser eye protection
- Specification of laser barriers and other laser hazard control measures
- Provide laser warning signs
- Provide information about laser use
How to Become a Laser Supervisor
- Complete the online Georgia Tech Laser Safety Training
- Submit the Form LS-1, Laser Supervisor Registration
- The Laser Safety Officer will send an email when you are set up as a Laser Supervisor in EHSA
- Additional steps
- After you receive the notification from step 3, register your lasers using Form LR-1, Laser Registration
- Generate laser standard operating procedures (SOP)
- Instruct your laser users to complete the online laser safety training
- Laser Users then submit Form LU-1, Laser User Registration
- Provide and document hands-on operational training with all Laser Users (signature page of SOP for documentation)
