Read the incident below, and see if you can determine how it could have been avoided:
A student in a lab was working at a biosafety cabinet (BSC) wearing gloves. He went to dispose of a glass pipette into the sharps container located under the BSC when he was stuck with broken glass from a previously disposed pipette that was sticking out of the sharps container.
He left the lab immediately and washed at a sink in the general open lab area for 5 minutes with soap and water. After washing, he wiped the area with ethanol.
Four hours later, after discussing the incident with a researcher, the student was advised to notify the Biosafety Officer. The BSO investigated and advised the student to wash at the sink for another 10 minutes with soap and water and then seek a physician for examination.
