Slips, trips and falls are hazards found in almost every type of environment. Studies have shown that slips, trips and falls make up 15% of all accidental deaths and is one of the most frequently reported injuries.

Here at Tech, slips, trips and falls are one of the leading occupational related injuries. Did you know there are substantial variances between slips, trips and falls?

Slips occur when there is too little traction between the feet and walking surface, while trips on the other hand occurs two different ways. The most common method is when the foot or lower leg hits an object and the upper body continues moving resulting in a loss of balance. Second most common is stepping down to a lower surface and losing balance.

Falls are similar to trips but results when a person is too far off the center of balance. Slips, trips and falls can have detrimental effects on the body leading to disability and sometimes even death.

  • Establish good housekeeping practices - maintain clear, well lit, tidy work areas free of clutter; assess your work or study area for possible hazards
  • Have warning signs indicating wet areas
  • Do not allow carried items to obstruct your view
  • Wear proper footwear with efficient deep tread in place
  • In hazardous weather, walk more slowly so you can react to traction changes
  • If using ladders, make sure ladders are free from defects and are locked in safe position and areas when in use
  • Lastly, ALWAYS use the proper PPE when doing any type of elevated work
