Good housekeeping is a vital task in every operation especially while working in a machine shop, maker space or lab. Good housekeeping helps reduce injuries and incidents due to better visual of the environment to be able to identify hazards and risks and it creates an orderly environment that can help occupants feel safer in their workspace. Do not wait for a formal safety inspection to find examples of poor housekeeping. Take a little time each day to put things away after using it, clean up your workstation, sweep up after a messy job, and encourage others around you to clean up after themselves. Simple steps like these can help create a safety mindset and help maintain a safe environment.
Here is a checklist that you can ask yourself to ensure that your workspace/area is following good housekeeping:
- Are stored items kept out of the aisles and pathways?
- Are wet floors promptly mopped up and cleaned?
- Are floors swept regularly?
- Are materials properly stored in the right place?
- Are materials stored on shelves stable?
- Is there clear access to all fire extinguishers?
- Are electrical panels not obstructed and following the 3-foot clearance?
- If I see something unsafe, have I reported it to EHS?
Practicing good housekeeping every day is a simple step that can help improve safety in the workspace. If you may need training on housekeeping, email General Safety at generalsafety@ehs.gatech.edu.
